A new state law has moved city and school board elections to the fall instead of the spring in odd-numbered years. That means the deadline to file has also changed under the law. Candidates interested in running for Wakefield’s city council positions 3, 4 or 5 or school board have until noon on June 1, 2017. You must file at the County Clerk’s office and there is a $20 filing fee or if filing by petition, the requirements for petition are 13 signatures.

Local general elections will be held the first Tuesday in November (Nov. 7), and primaries, if necessary, will be held in first Tuesday in August (Aug. 1). Newly elected officials will take office at the first meeting after Jan. 1, which in the City of Wakefield’s case will be the 2nd Monday in January.
